When Veterans receive care from an out-of-network provider, they may be responsible for any difference between what VA pays and what the provider charges (referred to as “balance billing”). Veterans enrolled in VA Health Care are strongly encouraged to use in-network providers to avoid balance billing. CCNs are designed to provide Veterans with the resources they need to get the care they deserve, whether from VA hospitals or private providers.

If you’re a combat Veteran, apply right away to take advantage of 10 years of enhanced eligibility. You may qualify for enhanced eligibility status if you meet at least one of these requirements. Enhanced eligibility means that we’ll place you in a higher priority group. This benefit provides a monthly payment to qualifying veterans to help pay for home care. To receive this monthly allowance, certain eligibility requirements such as age, income, disability, and net worth must be met. Seniors who have served in the armed forces are eligible for a useful benefit known as the veterans’ home care program. Elderly veterans receive assistance with the activities of daily living, which allows them to age in the comfort of home. With home health assistance, professionals are licensed and have received specialized training. The role of these professionals includes all the duties of a homemaking professional, but they are also able to help with a wide range of skilled services to ensure the overall well-being of veterans in their care.
VA staff members can assist in connecting veterans with local providers. In some cases, they may even be able to add a desired provider to the VA’s network. Keep in mind that community care services, providers and availability vary by location. VA community care is a program that allows Veterans to receive health care from non-VA providers. It can benefit Veterans who live in rural areas or those who need specialized care that the VA doesn’t provide.
Eligibility for Community Care Services
Visit healthcare.gov to find out if you qualify for health insurance. If you’ve received one of these discharge statuses, you may not be eligible for VA benefits. Veterans who agree to pay to the United States the applicable co-payment determined under 38 U.S.C.1710 and 1710 , if they seek VA hospital nursing home or outpatient care.
CHAMPVA, on the other hand, is a program that provides health care benefits to the spouses and dependent children of disabled or deceased Veterans. If you’re separating from service due to a service-connected illness or injury, you may be eligible for VA health care benefits and certain TRICARE benefits. Your priority group may affect how soon we sign you up for health care benefits. It may also affect how much you’ll have to pay toward the cost of your care. The first priority for admission shall be given to veterans who have no adequate means of support.
It should also be noted that these special services are not just reserved for those that need help completing various activities for daily living. Indeed, assisted living is a terrific option for those that want a break from having to handle home maintenance and would prefer to spend more time on enjoying the leisurely life of a retiree. Homemaking services focus on basic caregiving duties and non-medical support, so no extensive training or specialized expertise is required, and as a result, are often less expensive. Homemaking services involve assistance with tasks such as personal hygiene, bathing, grooming, and dressing.
Veterans whose entitlement to disability compensation is suspended because of the receipt of retired pay. Housebound is an increased monthly pension amount paid if you are substantially confined to your immediate premises because of a permanent disability. For the families of seniors who have served our country, the Veterans Administration has a special Aid and Attendance pension program. Has demonstrated high use of medical services defined as three or more hospitalizations in the past year or has utilized outpatient clinics or emergency evaluation units twelve or more times in the past year. The VA does not pay for travel expenses, including mileage, to or from VA appointments. However, the VA will reimburse Veterans for travel expenses incurred while receiving VA-authorized care, such as mental health counseling or VA-funded medical care. To be eligible for reimbursement, Veterans must have a service-connected disability rating of 30% or more or be classified as needy according to VA standards. Any Veteran who needs approval from VA before receiving care from a community provider is likely eligible for the VA community care program.
Examples of activities of daily living may include bathing, taking medications, dressing, doctor’s appointments, and preparing meals. Even if a veteran has applied for VA medical benefits before and been denied coverage, it may be worth applying again. As of October 1, 2022, this program is now open to family caregivers of eligible Veterans of all eras. This includes eligible Veterans who served after May 7, 1975, and before September 11, 2001. In addition, a homemaking professional serves as a companion and can help prepare meals, perform light housekeeping, do laundry, and run errands. Like other seniors, as veterans age, they may have difficulty doing daily activities and will require some assistance. Most seniors, including veterans, prefer to age in place rather than move to an assisted living facility or nursing home. Without question, the VAs pension substantially alleviates a significant portion of the financial burden of veteran home care. Professional care services are flexible, with respite care, post-operative care and part-time care being available.
VA Community Care Eligibility
For a veteran, the VAs monthly payments are $1794 and for a married couple equals $2127. A little-known VA benefit, however, is available to help eligible veterans offset the financial costs of veteran home care with either a homemaking service or a home health assistance professional. The CCN is divided into five regional networks that are developed and administered by Third Party Administrators on behalf of the VA. TriWest Health Care Alliance and Optum Public Sector Solutions, Inc. are the TPAs currently responsible for regions one through five.
